Rainforest Essential Comforts

“In the rain forest, no niche lies unused. No emptiness goes unfilled. No gasp of sunlight goes untrapped. In a million vest pockets, a million life-forms quietly tick.“ (Diane Ackerman)

The following thoughts arise from our December 2019 cruise stopover in Costa Rica. From the port city of Limon, Ruth and I would proceed inland by tour bus to witness a lush profusion of massive trees, dangling vines, and thick underbrush in the Veragua Rainforest. Challenging ourselves to embark on a more strenuous hiking option there, we obtained a unique sensory feel for this densely alive jungle along a steep uphill trail. At times, I imagined myself as an inviting prey, warily glancing at a slithering snake silently hiding under a fallen leaf nearby. Yet on other occasions, I felt a noticeable spurt in positive energy as I inhaled the freshly oxygenated air. For the grand finale of our eco -adventure, we would enjoy a unique, panoramic view of the rainforest ecosystem from the thrilling heights of an overhead tram ride.

In reliving key photographic moments from this memorable cruise excursion in Costa Rica, the following poetic thoughts come clearly to mind.
