Autumn 2021 Roadtrip (Moving Monument Message)

“Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” (John Adams)

“Democracy is never a final achievement. It is a call to an untiring effort.” (John F. Kennedy)

On Veteran’s Day, I look back to our recent weekend stopover in Washington D.C, at the end of our Fall 2021 road trip. You must understand that I’m feeling quite emotional about three patriotic sights that we visited in the Nation’s Capital over those four days (The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial). For these exalted dedications to George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson resonate my awe, respect, and gratitude for those American ideals so courageously fought for in the past.

How quickly this could all be gone though if anger filled disunity continues  and the consent of the people to govern goes suddenly wrong! After all, I reason that America’s fragile hold on democracy seems tenuous now at best as we recover from the past leadership failures of a reality star President, his false re-election claims, and a treasonous plot by some of his extreme  followers to commit violent mayhem at the U.S. Capitol last Jan.6.

It seems no coincidence then that our long road trip path in Washington D.C. this November ends on the day when we celebrate military veterans who so dutifully serve Democracy’s cause. For our love of travel at home and abroad could go quickly away in the face of a dangerous despot ruling ruthlessly  from Washington D.C. Thank you for following our latest autumn journey. We’re scheduled to resume our cruising travels in March 2022 via a repositioning cruise to Europe.
